Siannise & Thai

Introduction

Thai, or Central Thai, is a Tai language of the Kra–Dai language family spoken by the Central Thai people and a vast majority of Thai Chinese. It is the sole official language of Thailand. Thai is the most spoken of over 60 languages of Thailand by both number of native and overall speakers and spoken by approximately 88 percent of the country’s population of around 69 million people. Only 34 percent of Thai speakers in Thailand speak it as a native language.

Thai, also historically known as Siamese, is part of the larger Tai language family, and the “official” version spoken in Thailand is based on the dialect local to the Bangkok region.

Thai is also made up of lots of foreign loanwords from other languages, including Chinese, Pali, Sanskrit, Khmer, Portuguese, Austronesian, and more recently, English.

Why to learn?

Learning Thai helps you better understand the culture. … The more you pick up the more you will understand Thai people, and easier you will find it to integrate into a community, enabling you to make Thai friends and understand local lingo.

Learning to speak Thai will be a massive advantage in any profession because it means you can be called upon to speak with other staff or clients who speak little English. For example, as a teacher you will be able to speak with parents, and also better relate to your students. As a company employee you will be able to join in conversations between Thai staff.

Since not all foreigners that live in Thailand make the effort to learn Thai, you will definitely stand out if you do. Thai people will give you a huge amount of respect and will also make much more effort to get to know you as well and to involve you in their lives. In fact, you can impress them just by speaking a little Thai and they will be willing to help you out with all sorts of things.
