Australian English

Introduction

Australian English is a unique ever-changing and evolving speech that illustrates itself through language. Australian English is Australia’s de facto main language. The initial population of Australia was made up of Indigenous and later, people of British and Irish descent. Australian English is sometimes described as a mixture of American English and British English, but that’s not entirely accurate.

Separate to the rest of the world, Australian English has developed through centuries with a universal language being established along with unique core Australian values and the Australian identity. The irreverent Australian society is influenced by the convicts which is still relevant today.

Why to learn?

The Australian accent is famous for its vowel sounds, absence of a strong “r” pronunciation and the use of an inflection or intonation at the end of sentences, which can make statements sound like questions. According to Felicity, the way vowels are pronounced is the most peculiar feature of Australian English.

Australian English uses more diminutives than any other form of English. Diminutives are shortened versions of standard English words. They’re used in American English too, of course, especially among the younger generations. Australian English makes an art form out of abbreviation. In fact, there are more than 4300 recorded diminutives in Australian English, according to Australian Geographic.
